The FDA warned eight companies that market over-the-counter (OTC)\u00a0chelation therapies that their products are unapproved drugs and it is a violation to make unsubstantiated claims about these products.\u00a0 Recently there has been an upsurge of chelation products in the internet.\u00a0 Chelation is a process to bind toxic chemicals such as heavy metals like lead and excrete them from the body.\u00a0 There have been claims that chelation can help a variety of diseases including autism<\/a>, Alzheimer’s disease<\/a>, Parkinson’s disease<\/a>, and heart diseases.\u00a0 There are no studies to show that chelation can help these diseases.\u00a0 Unfortunately these diseases have limited medical treatment and preys on the desperation of patients seeking a cure.\u00a0 The only approved chelation therapies are by prescription only and need to be closely monitored by a physician.\u00a0 The prescription chelation treatments also have adverse side effects and must be monitored.\u00a0 Chelation therapies can cause severe dehydration and kidney failure if not used properly.\u00a0 In addition to causing serious medical problems, OTC chelation treatments may prevent patients from obtaing effective medical therapy.\u00a0 Some of these are marketed as dietary supplements but they fall under the FDA’s regulation because they claim to treat, mitigate, prevent, or diagnose disease.<\/p>\n
