The good news is that<\/span> it is a solvable problem that isn\u2019t even difficult. <\/span>You\u2019re already making great strides toward your goal<\/span> by wanting to connect with your children. It\u2019s essential <\/span>to care about them and what goes on around them. Take time to realize you\u2019re doing a good thing,<\/span> which should help boost your confidence as a parent. <\/span><\/p>\n

Talk (and Listen) to Them<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most basic way\u00a0to connect with your children is to talk to them.\u00a0Tell them about your day and ask about theirs. Try to remember everything they tell you. Children have a memory that just won\u2019t quit sometimes and<\/span> expect you to have the same. Ask your kids <\/span>questions. It\u2019s imperative for people to feel like the person<\/span> they\u2019re talking to cares about what they have to say. Asking questions about what your kids tell you proves you were listening and want to know more. Maintaining eye contact also shows that you\u2019re being attentive. A recent study on parents and teen relationships<\/a> revealed that using engaged listening techniques <\/span>s<\/span>uch as eye contact, nodding, and using specific keywords have a powerful effect on teens\u2019 willingness to open up to their parents. Try not to expect your child to tell you everything about themselves in one sitting. As a parent, you\u2019re there primarily to ensure that the child in your care is safe and grows up well. It\u2019s necessary to find a balance <\/span>between parenting and friendship. Kids can be challenging. It may seem that no matter what you try,<\/span> you still feel just as distant from them as when you started. Again, don\u2019t give up.
